What?
The Rotary challenge "Race the Train" is a competition between runners on a 14 miles trail course and a steam train. The Quarry challenge, the Dolgoch and Tynllwynh are other less demanding events organized on the same day.
Where?
The Gwynedd coastal town of Tywyn in the beautiful Wales countryside: the start is on the crest of the main railway line bridge, near the Talyllyn Railway station. The course goes to Abergynolwyn and back.
When?
Race the Train takes place in August. There is a limit of just over 3 hours to complete the race: the runners (and the train) are started by the train whistle.
Why?
A superbly themed race to challenge the Talyllyn Railway (www.talyllyn.co.uk), a historic narrow-gauge steam railway, one of the great trains of Wales. A must do at least once for who likes to jog in the countryside and all multi – terrain runners. And not boring for friends and spectators either as they can watch travelling on the trains. Since the route is (too say the least) quite hilly and the course is tough, beating the train is not an easy feat: 14 miles in less than 1h and 48 minutes is not a goal for many. But if you are not up to the 'Race the Train' distance, you can still join the Dolgoch challenge (5.5 miles) or the Tyllwynhen challenge (3.5 miles). They start a few miles out of Tywyn.
