What?
For once not a race for everybody: with 42,195 km and 1944 m of total slope, the Zermatt Marathon is not an easy stroll in the park. If you are not up to the challenge and prefer a shorter half marathon distance, you can find a partner and join the relay race. Same fun, half the effort.
Where?
The race starts in St. Niklaus, in the lowest-lying mountain valley in Switzerland, up along the bank of the Vispa River to the world-famous town of Zermatt and finishes on Riffelberg, with a great view of a dozen of 4000 meters summits, Matterhorn included.
When?
Beginning of July. The maximum time to reach the highest-altitude finish line in Europe is just over seven hours.
Why?
Once in a while forget crowded city races: Zermatt is surrounded by a range of amazing mountains, it is famous worldwide for the Matterhorn (Mount Cervin) and it possibly offers the best mountain marathon in Europe: from Sunnega to Riffelalp, the views are spectacular and a pint of the free beer is waiting for you at the end of the challenge in Gornergrat. Many runners dare not brave a full mountain marathon but the relay-race offers a chance to many more: if you have not a partner yet, you can join the "pool of runners" on-line and find one!
