What?
Also known as the Race of Five 4000m Peaks, the Sierre-Zinal is an unusual 31 km with 2200m ascent and 800m descent in the French-speaking region of Switzerland.
Where?
The race starts from Sierre (585 m) and then quickly (or not so quickly) the route along forest and stony paths will take you on trails to some of the best mountains in Switzerland. The finish line is in Zinal (1680 m), after some struggling to reach Ponchette, Tignosa and Nava (2425 m).
When?
August.
Why?
Next August enjoy the Couronne Impériale well away from the crowds: magnificent scenery, exceptional organisation and fantastic trail running are common in Switzerland but the Race of Five 4000m Peaks is the finest race in the in the Valais' Alps and one of the finest mountain races in the world. Despite the name, you do not need to climb the 5 peaks (Dent Blanche, Bishorn, Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn and Ober Gabelhorn) but do not underestimate the effort and the distance: the winner usually spends more than 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete the course. For accommodation, check the exhaustive list of options of the Zinal tourist website (www.zinal.ch/en/Place).
