What?
Formerly known as the Seven Sisters Marathon, Beachy Head is a multi-terrain marathon (almost no road-running).
Where?
Start and finish of the race are at St. Bede's School in Eastbourne, a popular and traditional sea-side resort on the south coast of England. The cross-country challenge covers most of the hills around the Victorian seaside resort, including Beachy Head, at 162m, the highest chalk sea cliff in the country.
When?
The 2011 Beachy Head Marathon will be on Saturday 22 October. The maximum time to complete the marathon for the 2000 runners, joggers and walkers from around the world is 9 hours.
Why?
A gruelling course – the total ascent is over 1K meters – and a memorable atmosphere: more a personal challenge and a rambling event on the hills than a race. Forget your watch and mile markers (even the winner last year took over 3 hours to cross the finish line) and look forward to an incredible marathon running the last few miles along the cliff edges. After the Saturday run, relax on the shingle beaches of the sunniest place in Great Britain or, if you still have some energy left, walk part of the South Downs Way footpath. Information on accommodation and events is available on the excellent Visit Eastbourne (www.visiteastbourne.com).
