What?
The New Year's Marathon Zurich (Neujahrsmarathon Zürich) is a challenging and uncommon marathon taking place near Zurich in Switzerland. A half marathon and a quarter marathon are taking place as well. The race is quite flat but forget the tarmac, it's mainly off road.
Where?
Start and finish are in Schlieren (Sporthalle Unterrohr), a few miles from Zurich and a stop of the S-Bahn as well. To complete the marathon you have to finish in the maximum time of 5 hours and run 4 laps along the river Limmat. The half marathon is two laps, the quarter marathon just one.
When?
The marathon starts at midnight at the beginning of the New Year. The half marathon and the quarter marathon a few minutes later. Be ready for some chilly weather and (very often) ice and snow.
Why?
A unique night race and occasion. Zurich is a lovely destination for a winter holiday and not only for ski lovers. Forget the traditional New Year's party and the running resolutions after too much food and drinks during the festive period and get ready for a race during New Year's night. 560 runners from 26 different nations completed the race in 2011. And if you are not Swiss (the largest group) you can (very temporary and very briefly) be the fastest runner in your country for 2011: the Neujahrsmarathon is worldwide the first official (AIMS/IAAF) marathon of the year.
