Marathon enthusiasts are gearing up for the highly anticipated 2025 Ballarat Marathon, set to draw thousands of runners and spectators to the vibrant city this weekend. The second edition of the Ballarat Marathon road running festival is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, and Sunday, April 27, with a record-breaking number of over 9000 entries across various events, showcasing Ballarat as a premier marathon destination.
This year’s event has seen a substantial increase in participants, with approximately 80% of entrants hailing from outside Ballarat, leading to full occupancy in accommodation facilities. The marathon is poised to inject a significant $3.1 million boost into the local economy, solidifying its status as the fourth largest marathon in Australia, following Sydney, Gold Coast, and Melbourne.
With the full marathon attracting nearly 3000 runners and the half marathon already sold out with 3500 entries, the event promises an exhilarating experience for both athletes and spectators. Local businesses are joining the festivities, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere with entertainment offerings spread along the course.
City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Tracey Hargreaves, expressed excitement about the marathon’s exponential growth and emphasized its positive impacts on the city, including economic benefits, fundraising opportunities, and promoting health and fitness. Despite potential disruptions to regular city movement, residents are urged to support the event, recognizing its significance for Ballarat’s community and economy.
As the marathon fever sweeps through Ballarat, preparations are underway to ensure a memorable experience for everyone involved. Spectators can look forward to enhanced entertainment options, with live music acts and DJs stationed at various points along the course to cheer on the runners.
The event will also feature a Carb Party involving 24 local businesses offering energy-packed treats, while 15 cafes will open early on Sunday to cater to early risers. Courtesy buses will facilitate easy movement along the course, enhancing the overall marathon experience.
Central to the marathon’s ethos is fundraising for charity, with participants raising close to $60,000 for various causes. The Ballarat Health Services Foundation serves as the event’s main charity partner, offering incentives for fundraisers, including the chance to win prizes such as headphones and running gear.
Due to the marathon, road closures will be in effect, including the closure of Sturt Street on Sunday to facilitate the event. However, pedestrian access to local shops will be maintained, and emergency services will have uninterrupted access to all properties within the affected areas.
The marathon course, meticulously designed by renowned runner Steve Moneghetti, offers a scenic route through Ballarat’s iconic landmarks, promising a flat and fast track for participants to achieve personal best times. With a focus on promoting health and wellbeing, the marathon embodies Ballarat’s spirit of community and vitality.
