As the Gold Coast Marathon approaches its 45th year, a group of runners from Bond University is gearing up to tackle the iconic 42.2km course at Broadwater Parklands. Among them is Alexander Dunster, a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science student, who is making the leap from half marathons to his first full marathon this weekend. His newfound passion for long-distance running was sparked by a half marathon in Brisbane, leading him to set his sights on conquering the ultimate running challenge.
Sophie Rice, a Bond University student pursuing a Bachelor of Medical Studies and Doctor of Medicine, is no stranger to the starting line at Broadwater Parklands. This year’s Gold Coast Marathon marks her fourth half marathon, with plans to tackle the Wimbledon Half Marathon abroad. For Sophie, these events are not just about competition but also personal growth and pushing her limits in pursuit of new challenges.
Nicholas Reimer, a Canadian Doctor of Physiotherapy student, will also be testing his endurance on the Gold Coast course as he takes on his first full marathon. Having previously focused on shorter distances like the 1000m and 1500m, Nicholas has dedicated the past six months to rigorous training in preparation for the race. His goal is not just to complete the marathon but to achieve a competitive time under 2:45, marking a significant milestone in his running journey.
For these Bondies, the Gold Coast Marathon represents more than just a race; it’s a culmination of hard work, dedication, and the thrill of pushing beyond one’s limits. The event’s reputation as Australia’s fastest marathon, with a majority of participants achieving personal bests, adds an extra layer of excitement and challenge to the experience. The scenic backdrop of the Gold Coast provides a picturesque setting for runners to test their mettle and create lasting memories.
In total, seven Bull Sharks from Bond University will be taking on the Gold Coast Marathon, each with their own motivations and aspirations driving them forward. From seasoned runners to first-time marathoners, the diverse group of participants reflects the university’s commitment to fostering a culture of sportsmanship, resilience, and personal growth among its students.
As the marathon weekend approaches, the anticipation and excitement among the Bondies continue to build, with each runner poised to write their own chapter in the storied history of the Gold Coast Marathon. Whether it’s chasing a personal best, conquering a new distance, or simply enjoying the thrill of the race, the bond shared by these runners extends beyond the finish line, uniting them in a shared journey of determination, perseverance, and the sheer joy of running.
