Cape Town has secured the prestigious opportunity to host the 2027 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, a significant milestone for the African continent. The event, scheduled from 6 to 10 October 2027, will take place against the breathtaking backdrop of Table Mountain, offering challenging terrains and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.
The successful bid to host the championships was a result of a collaborative effort by Golazo South Africa, Athletics South Africa, and Western Province Athletics. Cape Town’s reputation as a top destination for endurance sports was a key factor in winning the bid, with the city having previously hosted renowned running events like the Two Oceans Marathon and the Cape Town Marathon.
Organizers are optimistic that the championships will not only highlight Africa’s potential in off-road running but also inspire a new generation of trail runners across the continent. With an estimated 1,200 athletes from over 80 countries participating in the championship races and more than 2,000 individuals joining the mass participation events, the event is set to be a global gathering of running talent.
The races will traverse diverse terrains, from technical trails to fast descents, providing participants with a challenging yet rewarding experience. The routes around Table Mountain and Lion’s Head will offer steep climbs and breathtaking vistas of the city, mountains, and coastline.
The World Mountain Running Championships, which began in 1985, merged with the World Trail Championships in 2021 to create the biennial World Mountain and Trail Running Championships. Past editions have been held in various locations, including Chiang Mai, Innsbruck, and Stubai, with the 2025 event set to take place in Canfranc-Pirineos, Spain.
The upcoming championships in Cape Town will feature several senior championship races, including classic, uphill, short trail, long trail, and an under-20 race, alongside mass participation events for amateur runners. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe and other association presidents have praised Cape Town’s selection as a host, citing the city’s scenic beauty and potential to deliver an exceptional event.
Local officials have welcomed the announcement, emphasizing the economic benefits and job creation prospects associated with hosting such a prestigious event. The 2027 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships are poised to blend elite competition, picturesque landscapes, and a celebration of Africa’s emerging prominence in the global running community.
