Running for Peace: Shoshana Lavan, a dedicated peace activist and avid runner, embarked on a unique journey by participating in the Dead Sea Half Marathon to fundraise for the Forum of Israeli Peace NGOs. This initiative aimed to support a collaborative art project uniting Israelis and Palestinians through various art forms, promoting peace and understanding between the two communities. The project showcased their work at a successful peace event in Ibim, emphasizing the power of art in fostering dialogue and reconciliation.
Lavan’s decision to combine her passion for running with her commitment to peace led her to create a new concept she dubbed COVID Marathon Running (CMR). Despite facing the challenges of running back-to-back marathons within a short timeframe, she remained determined to make a difference through her efforts. Running through illness during the Dead Sea Half Marathon, Lavan’s resilience and dedication to the cause were truly tested as she completed the race despite testing positive for COVID-19.
Undeterred by the setback, Lavan continued her mission by participating in the Tel Aviv Half Marathon, where she found solace in the scenic route along the seafront. Reflecting on her experiences, she pondered the impact of her efforts on the ongoing peace project, which aimed to bridge cultural divides and promote collaboration between Israelis and Palestinians. The art project, which had been running for three years, sought to address emotional and social issues through music, dance, and film, highlighting the shared desire for peace and reconciliation in the region.
As Lavan prepared for the Jerusalem Full Marathon, she remained focused on her fundraising goals, aiming to support the ongoing work of the peace project. With the participation of Palestinian runners in a parallel initiative, the project aimed to capture the spirit of unity and cooperation through a collaborative video art project. Lavan’s fundraising target symbolized a collective effort to promote peace and understanding, transcending boundaries and inspiring others to join in the cause.
Through her journey of running for peace, Lavan emphasized the importance of solidarity and compassion, especially in the face of global challenges such as the conflict in Ukraine. With a heartfelt dedication to promoting peace everywhere, she urged others to support the cause and make a meaningful difference through their actions. As she continued her training for the upcoming marathon, Lavan remained steadfast in her belief that running could serve as a powerful tool for fostering dialogue, understanding, and reconciliation in a divided world.
Shoshana Lavan’s story embodies the spirit of resilience, determination, and hope, as she navigates the intersection of sports, activism, and art in pursuit of a more peaceful and inclusive future for all. Her commitment to running for peace serves as a testament to the transformative power of individual actions in creating positive change and building bridges across communities.
