Standard Chartered’s Head of Brand and Marketing, Neema Gitau, and Head of Communications for Kenya & Africa, Mercy Kabangi, have officially launched the 22nd edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon. The event, scheduled for October 26, 2025, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, aims to bring together over 30,000 participants, with registration already exceeding 16,500 in the first month.
The marathon, a significant annual event in Nairobi, has seen remarkable growth over the years, with this edition targeting a record 250 elite runners and attracting 363 international entrants. The organizers have introduced various improvements to enhance the race-day experience, including seven categories catering to a diverse range of participants, from elite athletes to families and corporate teams.
One of the key aspects of the Nairobi Marathon is its social impact initiative, aiming to raise funds for future-makers by Standard Chartered. In 2024, the marathon raised KSh 48 million for community initiatives, and this year, the target is to surpass KSh 70 million to support youth, women, and persons with disabilities.
To ensure a smooth and safe experience for all participants, the organizers have implemented several enhancements. These include measures to reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance the overall race experience. There will be separate finish points for different race categories, an expanded walk-off area, and reinforced teams for medal distribution and hydration support.
A notable addition this year is the introduction of a photo-finish zone for runners, adding an element of excitement and competition to the event. Athletics Kenya President Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei emphasized the importance of integrity and compliance in the marathon, with elite athletes undergoing thorough vetting and adherence to anti-doping regulations set by AK, ADAK, and AIU.
Since its inception, the Nairobi Marathon has made a significant impact, hosting over 300,000 participants and raising more than KSh 850 million for community initiatives. The event has become a symbol of unity, athleticism, and social responsibility, resonating with both local and international participants.
As the countdown to the 22nd edition continues, excitement and anticipation are building among runners and supporters alike. The marathon represents not just a race but a platform for positive change and empowerment, reflecting the spirit of collaboration and determination that defines the Kenyan running community.
With the support of sponsors, organizers, and participants, the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon is poised to set new records and create lasting impact, showcasing the power of sports to drive social change and transformation in the community.
