Darude recently marked the 25th anniversary of his hit song “Sandstorm” with a unique celebration in Helsinki. The Finnish DJ organized a fun run through the city, retracing the iconic locations featured in the music video and showcasing Helsinki’s landmarks to participants.
This special event preceded Darude’s ongoing STORM 25 World Tour, which kicked off in March and included a show in New York City before the Helsinki run on August 31. The tour is set to continue with performances in various cities in the U.S., such as Seattle, Honolulu, Albuquerque, and San Diego, after the Helsinki show on September 6.
The Sandstorm Run spanned a three-mile trail across Helsinki, guiding participants through key spots from the music video, including the Helsinki Cathedral stairs, the Baana cycling path, and Kaivopuisto park. Beyond commemorating the song’s milestone, the event also contributed 25% of its proceeds to the Finnish Sports Association, supporting youth sports development.
In an interview with We Rave You, Darude shared insights into the making of the iconic music video. Originating from an idea by Helsinki VJs Juuso Syrjä and Misko Iho, the video depicted a chase through the city, with Darude’s first-time acting experience capturing the essence of the track’s energy and vibe.
Reflecting on the video’s impact, Darude highlighted the significance of filming in Helsinki, particularly at the Helsinki Cathedral, a location that has become a tourist attraction due to the video’s enduring imagery. He expressed contentment with the video’s originality but hinted at the possibility of creating a similar project in other global capitals to symbolize the journey of the track and his career since its release.
Darude’s “Sandstorm” has not only left a lasting imprint on electronic music but has also become synonymous with his artistic identity.
