Perth residents flooded the streets in record numbers for the annual HBF Run For A Reason, with over 40,000 participants raising more than $1.9 million for charity. This year’s run held special significance as it paid tribute to former West Coast Eagle, Adam Selwood, who tragically passed away. Selwood, who had planned to run in honor of his late twin brother Troy, aimed to support mental health causes.
Dr. Lachlan Henderson, CEO of HBF, commended the charitable efforts of Perth’s community and acknowledged the poignant nature of the event following the recent losses experienced by the Selwood family and the AFL community. The record turnout for the 2025 run underscored the heartfelt reasons that drive each participant, with every bib number representing a personal story or cause.
Adam Selwood’s fundraising campaign for mental health charity zero2hero, which initially targeted $10,000, exceeded expectations by surpassing $76,000. Former West Coast players also joined in the event to honor Selwood’s memory and his advocacy for mental health awareness.
The run featured various distances, including the Brooks Half Marathon, the Specsavers 12-kilometer, and the CommBank three-kilometer courses. Among the inspiring participants was Ted Lee, a 26-year-old who overcame a severe motorcycle accident in 2021 that left him in a coma and with a grim prognosis of never walking again. Through perseverance and rehabilitation, Lee defied the odds, walking in the three-kilometer event and fundraising for Lifeline WA.
Reflecting on his journey, Lee shared, “Just four years ago, taking a single step seemed impossible, but now I’m preparing to walk three kilometers for a cause close to my heart. I lost a close friend to suicide last year, and I’ve had my own battles with mental health since the accident. There were days when I felt like giving up. That’s why Lifeline WA is so important; they’re there for people when they need it most.”
The 2025 HBF Run For A Reason marked its 13th year, having raised over $14 million since its inception in 2010 for various health and community organizations across Western Australia. The event not only promotes physical activity but also fosters a sense of community and support for important causes, emphasizing the power of collective action in making a positive impact.
