Daegu, a dynamic city in South Korea, is set to revolutionize its public transportation system with the implementation of a cash-free bus operation starting on April 1. The move aims to streamline bus services and enhance the overall commuting experience for residents and visitors alike.
With 1,566 buses operating on 127 routes, Daegu’s decision to go cash-free comes after a successful trial period that demonstrated significant benefits. By eliminating cash transactions, the city expects to reduce operational costs and improve efficiency in bus services.
The shift to a cashless system was prompted by the declining number of cash-paying passengers and the substantial expenses associated with managing cash revenue. Additionally, safety concerns related to delays and potential accidents arising from drivers handling cash while driving were key factors in the decision.
During the trial phase, which involved a phased rollout across different bus routes, the proportion of cash payments decreased significantly. This successful trial period was attributed to effective communication with passengers and the cooperation of bus drivers in implementing the new system seamlessly.
Passengers will now be required to use transportation cards for fare payment, with both physical and mobile card options available. Those without a card can obtain a mobile card by scanning a QR code at the bus stop or opt for a wire transfer payment method provided by the bus.
One notable feature of Daegu’s cash-free system is the integration of a free transportation card program for seniors, a pioneering initiative in South Korea. This inclusive approach ensures that seniors can easily adapt to the new payment system without encountering significant challenges.
Heo Jun-seok, the head of Daegu Metropolitan City’s Transportation Bureau, emphasized the city’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition to the cash-free system. Continuous monitoring and prompt resolution of any issues or complaints are part of Daegu’s strategy to deliver convenient and cost-effective public transportation services.
By embracing cashless bus operations, Daegu is aligning itself with global trends in urban transportation while prioritizing passenger convenience and safety. The city’s forward-thinking approach underscores its dedication to enhancing the quality of life for its residents and fostering a more sustainable and efficient public transport network.
