Participants have the option to select from five different courses, including a 5k walk, the 50k Israel Athletic Association Ultra Marathon championship, a 10k, a half marathon, and a full marathon track.

The races will kick off at Ein Bokek Beach, with some routes taking runners along the southern shore of the Dead Sea, while others will lead eastward on an embankment established by the Dead Sea Factory.

This embankment, serving as a symbolic dividing line between the Israeli and Jordanian sides of the sea, is accessible to the public solely on the day of the marathon.

The Dead Sea Marathon, now in its fourth year, carries on the legacy of the original Masada Ein Gedi race, which debuted in 1981 with a modest participation of 150 local runners. For three decades, the race path ran from Masada’s base along Highway 90, which was not closed off to traffic.

In 2019, the Tamar Regional Council opted to transform the Masada Ein Gedi race into the globally recognized Dead Sea Marathon, granting runners access to the embankment that extends into the sea.

Council head Nir Wanger emphasized that the marathon has become a prominent event for the Tamar region, drawing interest from runners across Israel and around the world.

The current half marathon is dedicated to the memory of Tomer and Giora Ron, sons of Kibbutz Ein Gedi member Eli Ron, who spearheaded the Masada Ein Gedi race.

The organization of the Dead Sea Marathon received backing from the Israel Chemicals Company, the Dead Sea Drainage Authority, and the Environmental Protection Ministry.

The marathon’s significance lies not only in its sporting challenge but also in its ability to bring together diverse participants in a unique setting, fostering camaraderie and cultural exchange.

With its breathtaking backdrop and challenging terrain, the Dead Sea Marathon stands out as a remarkable event that combines sportsmanship with natural beauty, attracting runners and spectators alike to witness this one-of-a-kind race at the lowest point on Earth.
