Edinburgh Marathon brewers have been granted approval to continue serving alcohol at upcoming events by East Lothian Council licensing authorities. Bellfield Brewery secured a license to sell drinks at this year’s finish line in Musselburgh during a recent meeting of the licensing board.
The council’s decision allows the brewery to serve beverages at future marathons without needing to present before the board again unless significant changes are made to their operational strategies, with future licenses being handled by officers.
This unanimous backing follows the scrutiny faced by the brewery during the previous year’s meeting, emphasizing the importance of adhering to licensing regulations.
Historically, the event’s alcohol license needed board approval due to its early start time, with sales commencing at 10 am, an hour earlier than the board’s Sunday policy. However, Councillor John McMillan stated that future applications would not require board intervention if the annual procedures remained consistent.
The decision was met with unanimous support from board members, affirming Bellfield Brewery’s operation of three bars at this year’s marathon. Two bars will serve draught beers, while a third ‘can bar’ will offer soft drinks alongside the specially brewed low-alcohol marathon Cooldown Lager.
Located in the charity village at Pinkie Playing Fields, these bars aim to enhance the participant experience at the marathon’s finish line in Musselburgh.
The Edinburgh Marathon, a longstanding annual event since 2003, underwent route changes in 2007, now starting in the city and traversing along the East Lothian coast before concluding in Musselburgh. The marathon has seen successful participation over the years, barring interruptions during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The collaboration between Edinburgh Marathon brewers and local authorities reflects the evolving landscape of event management, emphasizing responsible alcohol service and community engagement.
Such partnerships are vital in ensuring the seamless execution of large-scale events while prioritizing participant satisfaction and safety. The Edinburgh Marathon’s commitment to enhancing the overall experience for both runners and spectators underscores its significance as a premier sporting event in the region.
Looking ahead, ongoing collaborations between event organizers and local authorities are essential for maintaining the integrity and success of the Edinburgh Marathon, further solidifying its reputation as a must-attend event for running enthusiasts and supporters alike.
