Lisbon Marathon is set to expand its reach by partnering with the renowned London Marathon, aiming to attract over 20,000 participants in the upcoming editions. The collaboration between the two prestigious marathons was solidified after a ceremony at Lisbon City Hall, where the President of Maratona Clube de Portugal, Carlos Móia, expressed the significance of this agreement.
Carlos Móia highlighted the allure of Lisbon’s course and scenic routes as compelling factors for this partnership. London Marathon’s overwhelming demand, with 800,000 applicants vying for 55,000 spots, paved the way for Lisbon to emerge as a viable alternative for enthusiastic runners who missed out on London’s race.
The strategic alliance aims to leverage London’s extensive marketing reach to promote Lisbon Marathon as a favorable option for runners seeking new challenges. The potential economic impact of this collaboration is estimated to be around 60 million euros for Lisbon, Cascais, and Oeiras, benefiting the local communities and businesses.
Plans for the Lisbon Marathon include increasing participation to 15,000 in the next year and targeting 20,000 runners in the subsequent edition. The event will be held on a Saturday, allowing participants to explore Portugal further. The route will commence in Carcavelos, offering ample space for a large gathering, and traverse through Cascais before culminating in Lisbon.
The partnership was celebrated in the presence of key stakeholders, including the Mayors of Lisbon, Oeiras, and Cascais, underscoring the collaborative spirit between the two marathon organizations. Nick Bitel, the Executive Director of the London Marathon Group, emphasized shared values and the potential to elevate Lisbon Marathon to global acclaim.
Carlos Moedas, the Mayor of Lisbon, expressed his ambition to position the Lisbon Marathon among the world’s top 10 marathons, leveraging the expertise and reputation of the London Marathon. The 2025 edition of the Lisbon Marathon is scheduled for October 25, promising an exciting and transformative experience for participants and spectators alike.
This strategic partnership signifies a significant milestone for both marathons, heralding a new era of cooperation and mutual growth in the realm of international sporting events. It underscores the power of collaboration and shared values in elevating sporting experiences and fostering community engagement.
