Ultrarunner and coach Robbie Britton recently made headlines by breaking the 24-hour British record at the 24 Ore di Torino event in Italy. The challenging race, held at Ruffini Park in Turin, saw Britton cover an impressive distance of 277.439km, surpassing David Dowdle’s longstanding record set in 1982.
Dowdle’s record of 274.480km, achieved at the Gloucester 24hr Track Race, had remained unbeaten for over four decades until Britton’s remarkable performance. During the grueling 24-hour event, Britton maintained an average pace of 5:11min/km, showcasing both physical prowess and mental fortitude.
Britton’s successful record-breaking feat was fueled by a strategic nutrition plan, consuming 90g of carbohydrates per hour along with a mix of rice, pasta, and sweets. Additionally, he relied on sports nutrition from Precision Hydration and wore the carbon Nike AlphaFlys, the same shoes worn by elite runner Eliud Kipchoge during his historic sub-2-hour marathon.
The 24 Ore di Torino event attracted 159 participants, with Britton emerging as the standout performer. Italian ultrarunner Pietro Custodi finished second, setting a new Italian record in the SM60 category, while Oliviero Alotto claimed the third spot. Lisa Borzani of Italy also made an impressive debut in the event, covering a distance of 185.379km.
Reflecting on his journey to breaking the British record, Britton expressed gratitude towards his support team and coach, Tom Craggs. He emphasized the mental challenges of endurance running, highlighting the psychological battle he faced during the 24-hour race. Britton’s determination and perseverance paid off as he crossed the finish line, securing his position as a British record holder.
Britton’s achievement not only marks a personal milestone but also underscores the growing popularity of ultramarathons and endurance events. His success serves as inspiration for aspiring athletes and showcases the importance of meticulous preparation, mental resilience, and unwavering dedication in achieving athletic goals.
The historic significance of Britton’s record-breaking performance resonates within the running community, shedding light on the relentless pursuit of excellence in the world of endurance sports. As ultrarunning continues to gain traction globally, Britton’s triumph stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of athletes pushing the boundaries of human endurance.
