As the Rotterdam Marathon approaches, runners are being cautioned to be vigilant for signs of heat stress by Jelmer Alsma, a member of the medical team for the event and an internist at Erasmus MC. Heat stroke is a common concern among participants, with 77 cases requiring medical attention last year. Alsma emphasized the importance of recognizing symptoms early to prevent serious complications.
Heat stroke, characterized by a body temperature exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, can lead to altered consciousness and necessitates immediate cooling measures. Alsma stressed the significance of acclimatizing to running conditions and advised against training solely in cool weather. He recommended a gradual adaptation period of two weeks to prepare the body for the race.
Friends and family members spectating along the route were encouraged to monitor the well-being of runners, particularly after the 35-kilometer mark, a critical stage where many runners face challenges. Alsma highlighted the essential role of proper nutrition, hydration, and suitable attire in enhancing runners’ performance and reducing health risks.
Over 100 medical professionals have volunteered to provide assistance during the marathon, with specialized teams stationed at aid stations along the course. The medical support includes doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, and support staff, backed by a fleet of 10 ambulances and additional aid from the Red Cross for minor medical issues.
Weather conditions for the upcoming marathon appear favorable, with a forecast of around 13 degrees Celsius at the start and a possibility of rain. Alsma indicated that an ideal running temperature is below 15 degrees Celsius with some sunshine, fostering optimal performance for participants. The collaborative efforts of volunteers and medical staff aim to ensure a safe and successful event for all involved.
As the Rotterdam Marathon continues to draw participants from around the world, the emphasis on health and safety remains paramount. The dedicated medical team’s proactive approach and the runners’ preparation play crucial roles in mitigating risks associated with heat stress and ensuring a positive race experience for all.
