Waking up at 3:30 in the morning on a chilly January day in Orlando, I found myself questioning my decision to participate in the runDisney 10K at Walt Disney World. The excitement and nerves kicked in as I prepared to embark on this unique running experience.
Being part of Marathon Weekend at Disney World was not just about the race itself but also the opportunity to explore the fitness and self-care offerings at the resort. The blend of a family vacation with personal wellness activities was an enticing proposition that I couldn’t resist.
Standing in line for the bus to the race start line, surrounded by fellow runners, the energy was palpable despite the early hour and cold temperatures. The runDisney races are known for their festive atmosphere, where runners trade personal records for a fun-filled experience. Costumes, music, and encounters with Disney characters along the route added to the race’s unique charm.
Starting at the Epcot parking lot, the race route meandered through Epcot, the resort area, and the BoardWalk, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the park. Running past iconic Disney landmarks like Spaceship Earth added a magical touch to the experience, making the physical exertion worthwhile.
Completing the 10K and receiving my Chip and Dale-themed finishers medal left me with a sense of accomplishment and a desire to participate in more Disney races. The prospect of the Dopey Challenge, tackling multiple race distances in a single weekend, loomed as a future goal.
Returning to the hotel, I indulged in some personal wellness activities while my family enjoyed the hotel amenities. From yoga classes to spa treatments, Disney World offered a range of options to unwind and recharge after the race.
Exploring Disney Springs and revisiting Epcot with my family later in the day provided a different perspective on the park. It was no longer about running but about bonding with loved ones and enjoying the park’s attractions together.
In retrospect, the runDisney experience transcended mere physical activity; it was a blend of fitness, family time, and personal rejuvenation set against the backdrop of the magical world of Disney. The memories created during Marathon Weekend will linger as a testament to the unique charm and allure of running at the happiest place on earth.
