Guernsey Woman Overcomes Stroke to Run London Half Marathon

A remarkable story of resilience and determination unfolds as a Guernsey woman prepares to participate in the London Landmarks Half Marathon, nine years after surviving a stroke. Vicki Hewlett, now 29, faced the daunting challenge of rebuilding her life after experiencing a stroke that temporarily paralyzed her left side while residing in Essex. Undeterred by the physical limitations posed by the stroke, she embarked on a journey of recovery and self-discovery, fueled by a strong will to reclaim her passions and pursuits.

Teaming up with her close friend Sarah Buddery, also 29 and hailing from Guernsey, Vicki aims to complete the grueling 13.1-mile course in support of the Stroke Association. Their bond, forged through years of friendship since their school days, has been a source of unwavering support and motivation throughout their training for this significant event. For Vicki, the marathon symbolizes a triumphant return to the activities she once thought might be beyond her reach, such as horse riding and running.

Sarah’s decision to participate in the London Landmarks Half Marathon was initially set for 2019 but was postponed due to the illness and subsequent passing of her mother. As they lace up their running shoes for this poignant race, scheduled on the poignant anniversary of Sarah’s mother’s passing, the duo finds solace and strength in each other’s company. The course, weaving through iconic London landmarks like Big Ben and Trafalgar Square, offers a backdrop of historical significance and scenic beauty to their inspiring journey.

The camaraderie between Vicki and Sarah exemplifies the enduring power of friendship and shared experiences in overcoming life’s challenges. Their mutual encouragement and unwavering support have propelled them through the physical and emotional hurdles of training for the marathon, underscoring the importance of companionship in achieving personal milestones. Vicki acknowledges the pivotal role Sarah has played in her journey, acknowledging that without her friend’s encouragement, she may not have embarked on this ambitious endeavor.

As Vicki and Sarah prepare to tackle the London Landmarks Half Marathon, their story serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of determination. Through their shared commitment to raising awareness and funds for the Stroke Association, they embody the spirit of overcoming adversity and turning obstacles into opportunities for growth and empowerment. The London Landmarks Half Marathon not only represents a physical test of endurance but also a symbolic triumph of perseverance and friendship in the face of adversity.
