In a groundbreaking development, humanoid robots are set to compete directly against human participants in a half-marathon event in Beijing. This unprecedented race, scheduled for April 13, will bring together the realms of robotics and athletics, showcasing the latest advancements in humanoid robotics and artificial intelligence.
The competition, organized by the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, will see humanoid robots pitted against 12,000 human runners. The robots, designed to be humanoid and without wheels, will have to navigate the course within a three-and-a-half-hour time limit. Notably, the top three finishers, whether human or robot, will be awarded prizes, with categories including race completion, best endurance, and most popular robot.
The event aims not only to demonstrate the progress in humanoid robotics but also to stimulate dialogue and enhance public awareness of robot capabilities, thus fostering further advancements in the industry. Humanoid robots have been increasingly integrated into various sectors, with collaborations between companies like Mercedes-Benz and BMW with humanoid robot manufacturers for testing applications in factory settings.
Participants in the competition, open to entities worldwide such as companies, research institutions, robot clubs, and universities, must adhere to specific criteria set by China’s International Center for Science and Technology Innovation. The robots competing can be either remote-controlled or fully autonomous, providing a diverse showcase of robotic capabilities.
During the race, participating robot teams will have the flexibility to change batteries or swap out robots in a relay system, albeit incurring a time penalty for each exchange. Registration for the event commences on March 11, offering a platform for global innovators to demonstrate their advancements in humanoid robotics technology.
