Falcon local Jedd Bell has been selected to join the 2025 Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) Squad, marking a significant achievement in his running journey. This year, the IMP received a record number of applications, reflecting the growing interest and participation in the program aimed at First Nations individuals aged 18 to 30. The six-month training program culminates in the prestigious TCS New York City Marathon, providing participants with a unique opportunity to showcase their skills on an international platform.

As a proud Gunditjmara man, Jedd Bell embarked on this transformative experience by attending workshops in Canberra, a crucial step in his preparation for the upcoming marathon. The IMP, founded by former World Marathon Champion Robert de Castella AO MBE, emphasizes the importance of hard work, perseverance, and serving as positive role models within their communities. For Jedd and his fellow squad members, this journey is not just about physical fitness but also about self-discovery and personal growth.

Since its inception in 2010, the IMP has empowered 156 First Nations individuals, many of whom had no previous running background, to push their limits and achieve remarkable feats. The program’s success lies in its holistic approach to training, focusing on both physical and mental endurance. Through workshops conducted in various locations, including the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Alice Springs, and ultimately New York, participants undergo rigorous preparation to tackle the challenges of a marathon.

Robert de Castella highlighted the significance of the IMP in fostering a sense of accomplishment and self-belief among Indigenous youth. By using the marathon as a metaphor for life’s challenges, the program instills a sense of resilience and determination in its participants. The finish line of the race symbolizes not just the end of a physical journey but the beginning of a new chapter filled with endless possibilities and opportunities.

For Jedd Bell and his peers, the road to the TCS New York City Marathon represents a unique chance to defy their limits and inspire others through their dedication and hard work. As they embark on this life-changing experience, they carry with them the hopes and aspirations of their communities, embodying the spirit of resilience and determination that defines the IMP.
As the IMP continues to make a meaningful impact on the lives of Indigenous youth across Australia, it serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment, showcasing the transformative power of sport and community support. The journey of Jedd Bell and his fellow squad members is not just about running a marathon; it is a testament to the strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit of First Nations peoples striving to create a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
