A Co Armagh man, James Greene, recently completed a remarkable feat by raising over £11,500 for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust through a grueling 32-mile ultra-marathon in New York. The trust, established in 2013, supports bereaved families by assisting in repatriating the bodies of loved ones who have passed away abroad.
James, a trainee solicitor, initially aimed to raise £1,000 but was overwhelmed by the outpouring of generosity, surpassing his target by a significant margin. Having lived in New York and being familiar with the trust’s vital work, James felt a strong personal connection to the cause, further motivating his fundraising efforts.
His decision to undertake the ultra-marathon instead of a 5k run stemmed from a desire to make a more significant impact and honor the 32 counties of Ireland that the trust serves. Training rigorously by running five days a week, James prepared both physically and mentally for the demanding challenge.
Despite facing obstacles like taking wrong turns during the run, James persevered, ultimately completing a 56km route with the support of his girlfriend, friends, and family members who joined him along various legs of the journey. As he neared the finish line in Woodlawn, the community’s unexpected show of support left James deeply moved, underscoring the impact of his fundraising endeavor.
