Excitement is building as Marrakech prepares to host the 35th International Marathon and Half Marathon on January 26. Organizers have announced that more than 15,000 athletes, including over 110 professional runners from across the globe, are expected to participate in the prestigious event.
Director of the Marrakech International Marathon, Mohamed Knidiri, revealed during a press conference that the upcoming marathon will see the participation of renowned elite runners, such as Kenyan athletes Kitwara Sammy Irop, Kilimo Rhonzas Lokitam, and Moroccan runner Mohamed Reda El Aaraby.
Among the top women competitors set to grace the marathon are Ethiopian Beyene Tirfi Tsegaye and Bekele Abebech Afework, alongside Moroccan runners Kaoutar Farkoussi, Rkia El Moukim, Kaltoum Bouaasariya, and Hasna Zahi.
Knidiri highlighted that Marrakech’s mild January climate and runner-friendly course are conducive to achieving outstanding performances. The marathon, which attained the World Athletics label in 2020, ranks 11th globally and serves as a qualifying event for both the World Championships and the Olympic Games.
Adding to the excitement, this year’s marathon will include various activities, such as a children’s race and a five-kilometer “Welcome Race” on January 25, allowing participants to acclimate to Marrakech’s unique environment and vibe.
Notably, January 26 has been designated as a “Car-Free Day” in Marrakech, emphasizing the city’s commitment to environmental sustainability and road safety as key priorities.
