Over the weekend, the 15th Supersports Laguna Phuket Marathon saw a turnout of 8,000 runners for the annual “Run Paradise” event. This year’s edition, held on December 5 and 6, embraced a “new normal” approach by implementing strict safety measures while offering participants a picturesque route that meandered through local villages and the stunning beaches of Nai Yang, Layan, and Bang Tao.
The event not only showcased Phuket’s ability to host large-scale gatherings safely but also injected a much-needed economic boost into the island. Athletes from various nationalities displayed remarkable performances, with Polish triathlete Krzysztof Hadas securing victories in both the 5km and half marathon categories, adding another accolade to his recent win at the Laguna Phuket Triathlon.
In the 10.5km race, British runner Lewis Chalk emerged victorious after a tight battle with Thai competitor Anuwat Bunmak, clocking an impressive time of 00:35:22. Undeterred by the previous day’s race, Chalk continued his winning streak by clinching the Marathon title with a commanding lead, finishing in 02:55:48.
Among the standout performances was Sasiwimon Khongjit from Thailand, who claimed the female marathon title, followed by Maysinee Sukkuea and Wipawadee Titawattanavijit. The Half Marathon witnessed Thai runners Suchada Wattanaves and Nopchaya Handittagul securing the top spots in the female division.
Additionally, Suttida Udomchai led a Thai trio in the 10.5km female category. Notable personalities, including Thai celebrities Artiwara “Toon” Kongmalai and Ratchawin “Koi” Wongwiriya, added glamour to the event, completing their first marathon together after a much-talked-about wedding the previous week.
The marathon’s overall results revealed Lewis Chalk’s dominance in the male category, while Sasiwimon Khongjit emerged as the top female finisher. Teams like Subaru Phuket and Nham Daeng Yam Yen showcased their relay prowess, securing podium positions in the marathon relay event.
