2025 Indigenous Marathon Project Squad Applications Now Open

The Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) has officially opened applications for the 2025 squad, inviting First Nations individuals aged 18-30 to participate in this transformative program. Renowned for its portrayal in the documentary “Running to America,” the IMP aims to nurture Indigenous leaders and catalysts for change through the medium of running. Head coach and program manager, Jack Stevens, a graduate of the 2023 IMP, underscores the program’s comprehensive approach that extends beyond marathon preparation. He emphasizes the educational aspect of the IMP, equipping squad members with the knowledge and tools to instigate sustainable transformations within their communities, a concept referred to as the ‘Ripple Effect’ within the Indigenous Marathon Foundation (IMF).

The IMP, founded and directed by former world marathon champion Robert de Castella, prides itself on being inclusive, welcoming applications from all eligible First Nations individuals irrespective of their running background. Mr. de Castella emphasizes that most IMP graduates had no prior running experience, highlighting the program’s focus on individuals committed to personal well-being, interested in participating in the TCS New York City Marathon, and dedicated to effecting positive change in their communities. The IMP journey, conducted under the umbrella of the IMF, spans six months and encompasses a rigorous training regimen alongside an educational curriculum centered on Indigenous leadership and health promotion.

Successful squad members stand to gain new qualifications, leadership skills, and the opportunity to inspire Indigenous youth in their respective communities. The IMP’s impact extends far beyond the marathon, with over 85 percent of IMP Graduates actively engaged in supporting future squads and contributing to initiatives like RAW and I-CAN, aimed at promoting health and fitness within Indigenous communities. The story of Bree (Brianne) Yarran, a previous IMF runner and IMP participant, exemplifies the program’s transformative influence. After her IMP experience, Ms. Yarran pursued a legal career and now works at the Aboriginal Legal Service in Perth, concurrently serving as a Run Leader with Boorloo in Perth.

As the 2025 national try-out tour prepares to traverse communities across Australia, applications for the 2025 IMP Squad are open until year-end. The IMP continues to make a lasting impact by nurturing leaders, promoting health and fitness, and fostering a sense of community among Indigenous peoples.
