Decades after Kathrine Switzer broke barriers at the Boston Marathon, her legacy continues to inspire women worldwide to lace up their running shoes and hit the pavement. Switzer, the first woman to officially finish the Boston Marathon in 1967, co-founded 261 Fearless, a global running club aimed at empowering women of all ages and abilities.
Switzer’s journey began when she defied stereotypes and signed up for the male-dominated Boston Marathon under the initials K.V. Switzer. During the race, a race official attempted to disqualify her by ripping off her bib, but Switzer persevered, finishing the marathon and paving the way for women in sports.

Following her historic run, Switzer continued to champion women’s participation in running, completing 40 marathons and advocating for the inclusion of the women’s marathon in the Olympics. She co-founded 261 Fearless in 2015, a nonprofit organization that provides women with the opportunity to run, coach, and empower each other through education and community support.

261 Fearless has since grown into a global movement, with over 500 women trained as running coaches and 61 groups established in 14 countries. The organization’s mission goes beyond running, aiming to build confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of community among women of diverse backgrounds.
For Switzer and co-founder Edith Zuschmann, the impact of 261 Fearless extends far beyond the track. By fostering a nonjudgmental and noncompetitive environment, the organization empowers women to challenge themselves, support each other, and break down barriers that may hold them back.
Through stories like that of Sonnia Gallo Saavedra, a mother who found empowerment and community through 261 Fearless, the organization’s influence on women’s lives is evident. Gallo Saavedra’s journey from runner to coach exemplifies the transformative power of running and the importance of setting an example for future generations.
As women of all ages and abilities come together under the banner of 261 Fearless, Switzer emphasizes the importance of unity, acceptance, and collaboration. The organization’s impact transcends running, teaching women to work together, support each other, and embrace diversity without judgment.
With a growing network of runners spanning continents and cultures, 261 Fearless continues to inspire women to push their limits, pursue their passions, and find strength in solidarity. Switzer’s legacy as a trailblazer in women’s running lives on through the countless women who lace up their shoes, hit the road, and fearlessly chase their dreams.
