Canberra mother-of-two, Hanna Kogelman, faced a life-altering moment when she collapsed with a seizure while 32 weeks pregnant, only to be diagnosed with brain cancer. Less than a year later, she is gearing up for her second brain surgery at Canberra Hospital. Meanwhile, her brother Jacob Kogelman in Melbourne is on a mission to raise funds for the Australian Brain Cancer Foundation by participating in the Gold Coast Marathon next month.
Hanna’s ordeal began in 2024 when she was diagnosed with a Grade 2 Oligodendroglioma, a slow-growing brain tumor. Postponing treatment until after giving birth, she underwent surgery to remove a tumor from her frontal lobe, followed by a challenging recovery period. However, remnants of the tumor were later detected, leading to the upcoming second surgery in mid-June 2025.
Despite the uncertainties surrounding her condition, Hanna remains resilient, with unwavering support from her family and medical professionals. Her brother Jacob, inspired by the ABCF’s work in brain cancer research and patient support, decided to run the marathon to raise funds for the foundation’s initiatives, including cutting-edge research at ANU and essential patient services.
The ABCF’s involvement in groundbreaking research on glioma tumors, like Hanna’s, through projects such as “mini-brain organoids,” signifies a significant step forward in developing targeted treatments. Additionally, the foundation’s support programs, encompassing counseling, financial aid, and upcoming grants for families facing financial hardships, highlight the holistic approach to brain cancer care.
Jacob’s fundraising efforts, surpassing his initial goal by leaps and bounds, exemplify the power of community support in battling brain cancer. His dedication to not only aiding his sister but also contributing to the broader fight against brain cancer showcases the impact of individual initiatives in driving positive change.
As Hanna prepares for her upcoming surgery, her family’s unwavering support and Jacob’s fundraising endeavors stand as beacons of hope in the face of adversity. The collective efforts to raise awareness, funds, and support for brain cancer patients underscore the importance of solidarity and compassion in navigating challenging medical journeys.
