Discover the World Marathon Majors: Prestigious Races & Records Unveiled

The world of marathons is graced by a select group of prestigious races known as the World Marathon Majors. While over 800 marathons are held annually, only six hold the coveted title of World Marathon Major. These races, including the Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, London Marathon, Berlin Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and New York City Marathon, attract both amateur enthusiasts and elite runners seeking to conquer the challenging 42.195 km courses that wind through iconic city landscapes.

Participating in these World Marathon Majors is a dream for many runners, with some ambitious individuals aiming not just for one finisher’s medal but for the elusive Six Star Medal awarded to those who complete all six races. These marathons have witnessed remarkable achievements over the years, with records continually being shattered by exceptional athletes. Notably, Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya set the current men’s world record of 2:01:09 at the 2022 Berlin Marathon, while Brigid Kosgei established the women’s world record of 2:14:04 during the 2019 Chicago Marathon.

The Tokyo Marathon, the youngest of the World Marathon Majors, holds its race annually on the first Sunday in March. Originating in 2007, this marathon gained its Major status in 2012 and features a scenic route showcasing Tokyo’s landmarks such as the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Tower. The Boston Marathon, the oldest annual marathon globally, traces its roots back to 1897, inspired by the marathon race at the 1896 Olympic Games. The London Marathon, conceptualized by Olympic champion Chris Brasher in 1981, offers a fast course passing by iconic London landmarks like the Cutty Sark and Big Ben.

Berlin Marathon stands out for its reputation as the fastest Major course, witnessing numerous world records, including Eliud Kipchoge’s remarkable feat in 2022. The Chicago Marathon, established in 1977, has evolved into a premier event attracting thousands of participants annually. Finally, the New York City Marathon, the largest in the world, takes runners through all five boroughs of the city, culminating in Central Park.

These World Marathon Majors not only test the physical endurance of athletes but also embody the spirit of determination and achievement. With each race offering its unique challenges and rewards, these marathons continue to captivate both participants and spectators worldwide, showcasing the pinnacle of distance running excellence.
