At 88 years old, Ploutarchos Pourliakas, the oldest runner in the 41st Athens Marathon, shattered stereotypes by completing the iconic race. The Athens Marathon, also known as The Authentic, retraces the footsteps of the ancient Athenian messenger Phiedippides, who ran from Marathon to Athens to announce victory over the Persians in 490 BC. This historical marathon course was used in the 2004 Athens Olympics, adding to its significance.
Pourliakas proudly crossed the finish line at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, cheered on by his family and grandchildren. Remarkably, he finished the race 18 minutes faster than his previous attempt, completing the 42.195km route in six hours and 31 minutes. Reflecting on his achievement, Pourliakas expressed feeling youthful despite his advanced age, marking his 12th completion of the grueling marathon.
Inspired by his son, an ultramarathon runner, Pourliakas took up running at the age of 73 in his hometown of Kastoria, Greece. His dedication to training is evident as he covers four to five kilometers daily and up to 20 kilometers on weekends. Pourliakas attributes his physical prowess to a healthy lifestyle, abstaining from smoking, excessive drinking, and late nights. He emphasizes moderation in all aspects of life, with a daily indulgence in ‘tsipouro,’ a local drink he views as medicinal.
Despite skepticism about his age, Pourliakas remains undeterred, asserting that anyone can achieve remarkable feats with determination. He challenges doubters by proclaiming, “We all can do it. As long as we want to.” His resilience and passion for running serve as a testament to the power of perseverance and the boundless potential that exists within each individual.
The Athens Marathon stands as a symbol of endurance and historical significance, drawing participants from around the world to test their limits on the same course where ancient history and modern athletics converge. Pourliakas’ story exemplifies the spirit of the marathon, transcending age barriers and inspiring others to pursue their dreams relentlessly.
As the world celebrates Pourliakas’ remarkable achievement, his story serves as a reminder that age is no obstacle to greatness. With unwavering determination and a commitment to a healthy lifestyle, individuals like Pourliakas defy expectations and redefine what is possible, inspiring others to embrace challenges with courage and resilience.
