In an emotional tribute to his late son, Luke Wills has taken the lead in organizing a fundraising effort known as Jacob’s Squad for the Up All Night marathon. This initiative aims to support the Ronald McDonald House Charity, which provided care for Jacob Wills before he passed away at the age of 11 in 2023 following a battle with cancer.
The Up All Night marathon involves a grueling 42km walk through the night in Perth, scheduled for March 22-23. Luke Wills has brought together a team comprising nine individuals, including friends, family members, and colleagues, to participate in this challenging event. Named in honor of Jacob, the team, Jacob’s Squad, has already made significant progress towards their fundraising goal of $30,000, having raised $22,731 through various channels such as collection tins, social media campaigns, and personal outreach efforts.
This year marks Luke Wills’ fourth participation in the marathon, with previous involvements in both the Busselton and Perth marathons. Reflecting on the journey since Jacob’s passing almost two years ago, Wills acknowledges that the grieving process has evolved, making this year’s event somewhat easier compared to the initial stages of grief. The marathon serves as a poignant remembrance of Jacob, incorporating his spirit into the collective effort of Jacob’s Squad.
The outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming, with local businesses like Dragon Claw Tattoo Studio joining hands with Jacob’s Squad to host fundraising events, further bolstering their cause. Luke Wills expresses gratitude for the widespread support, emphasizing that the initiative not only honors Jacob’s memory but also underscores the impact he had on those around him.
Describing Jacob as a vibrant young boy who cherished soccer, Pokemon, and The Greatest Showman, Luke Wills finds solace in the fact that his son’s legacy is being carried forward through these philanthropic endeavors. The community response, characterized by voluntary contributions and genuine interest in supporting the cause, exemplifies the enduring impact of Jacob’s life and the positive influence he had on those who knew him.
As the fundraising efforts continue, Jacob’s Squad remains resolute in their mission to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House Charity, embodying the spirit of compassion and unity that defines their cause. Donations to support Jacob’s Squad and their fundraising endeavors can be made through the Up All Night website, symbolizing a collective commitment to honoring Jacob’s memory and making a difference in the lives of others.
