Running a marathon is a challenge in itself, but doing it in a novelty outfit takes the experience to a whole new level. Participants in the London Marathon have been known to don costumes ranging from towering nurses to giant rhinos, each outfit presenting its own set of challenges.

For Richard Stoate, running in a 10ft purple nurse costume for charity added extra weight and heat to his 26.2-mile journey. As he crossed the finish line after almost six hours, the relief of shedding the costume was palpable.

Save the Rhino International’s iconic rhinoceros costumes have been a staple at the London Marathon since 1992. Former chief executive Cathy Dean described the punishing experience inside the suit, with the costume developing its own sweaty microclimate and carrying the scent of previous runners.
Ann Beardsley and her sister tackled the Disney Dopey Challenge multiple times, running races in various whimsical costumes. Despite the challenges of itchy wigs and falling headwear, Beardsley emphasized the fun and camaraderie of running in costume.

Kellie Clark’s quest for a Guinness World Record led her to run marathons dressed as a Snickers bar, a Yorkie bar, and even a pea-shaped superhero. The weight and awkwardness of the costumes didn’t deter her, as she found joy in inspiring her children and raising money for charity.
George Bingham’s Angel of the North costume, constructed from glass fibre rods, posed a unique challenge due to its size and susceptibility to wind. Despite a near disaster on Tower Bridge, Bingham’s experience highlighted the risks and rewards of running in a novelty outfit.
Robert Duncombe’s tree costume for the London Marathon symbolized his fundraising efforts for cancer research. The electric atmosphere of the race, coupled with the physical strain of the costume, made for a memorable and emotional experience for Duncombe.
Running in a novelty outfit not only tests physical endurance but also evokes a range of emotions. From the overwhelming support of spectators to the sense of accomplishment in raising funds for charity, participants in these costumes find themselves part of a unique and inspiring community.
