With over 200,000 applications flooding in, the selection process for the upcoming race promises to be highly competitive, as only a small fraction, estimated at 2-3% of the total applicants, will ultimately be chosen to partake in the marathon on November 2, 2025.

Established in 1970, the TCS New York City Marathon holds a revered status as one of the World Marathon Majors, attracting runners from around the globe. The event has experienced remarkable growth over the years, both in terms of applicant numbers and actual participants. Athletes from approximately 140 countries converge in New York City, where they are greeted by the unwavering support of over a million spectators lining the streets across all five boroughs. The previous year’s marathon, held in 2024, saw a record-breaking turnout of over 55,000 runners, setting a high bar for the upcoming event. While the exact number of participants for the 2025 edition is yet to be finalized, expectations are rife that it will either match or surpass the figures from the previous year. In the 2024 race, Dutch athlete Abdi Nageeye clinched the men’s title, adding to his impressive track record in marathons, while Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya emerged victorious in the women’s category.
