Record Number Apply for NYC Marathon, Few Secure Coveted Spots

The 2025 TCS New York City Marathon has witnessed an overwhelming surge in applications, setting a new record for the number of hopeful participants vying for a chance to run in this prestigious event. With over 200,000 applications flooding in, the selection process for the upcoming race promises to be highly competitive, as only a small fraction, estimated at 2-3% of the total applicants, will ultimately be chosen to partake in the marathon on November 2, 2025.

Established in 1970, the TCS New York City Marathon holds a revered status as one of the World Marathon Majors, attracting runners from around the globe. The event has experienced remarkable growth over the years, both in terms of applicant numbers and actual participants. Athletes from approximately 140 countries converge in New York City, where they are greeted by the unwavering support of over a million spectators lining the streets across all five boroughs. This outpouring of encouragement serves as a driving force for participants, irrespective of their background or running prowess, as they brave the challenging 26.2-mile course.

NYRR CEO Rob Simmelkjaer highlighted the increasing allure of the TCS New York City Marathon, emphasizing the multiple avenues available for entry, including the general entry drawing, Official Charity Partner Program, NYRR Team for Climate, Member-Only Second Chance Drawing, NYRR marathon sweepstakes, and International Tour Operators. Such diverse entry options aim to accommodate the soaring interest in the marathon and provide opportunities for a broader spectrum of individuals to participate in this iconic race.

The previous year’s marathon, held in 2024, saw a record-breaking turnout of over 55,000 runners, setting a high bar for the upcoming event. While the exact number of participants for the 2025 edition is yet to be finalized, expectations are rife that it will either match or surpass the figures from the previous year. In the 2024 race, Dutch athlete Abdi Nageeye clinched the men’s title, adding to his impressive track record in marathons, while Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya emerged victorious in the women’s category.

Scheduled for November 2, 2025, the upcoming race promises to be a gathering of elite athletes in the heart of New York City, where they will vie for top honors amidst the backdrop of thousands of enthusiastic and fortunate participants. Beyond being a bucket list event for many running enthusiasts, the marathon serves as a platform for like-minded athletes to converge, share their accomplishments, and revel in the spirit of camaraderie that defines this annual spectacle.
