West Macs Monster Ultra-Marathon: Record Participation and Economic Boost
Ultra-marathoners from across Australia are gearing up for the West Macs Monster event on the Larapinta Trail in the NT's stunning national park. The event, held annually, is set to attract a record number of participants in four challenging races this year.
Event director Simon Duke, who also holds the race record, expressed excitement about the growing popularity of the event, with over 500 runners expected to take part in various race categories. The economic impact on Alice Springs is significant, with the event projected to exceed last year's $1.2 million boost to the local economy.

The West Macs Monster features races of varying distances, including the Sonder Monster, Ellery Monster, Standley Monster, and the ABC Alice Springs Simpson Monster. In addition to these main races, a non-podium 25km race and a 5km fun run are scheduled to add to the weekend's festivities.

One of the most challenging races, the 231km Sonder Monster, will see 22 determined competitors embark on a grueling journey starting at the base of Mount Sonder. The race director emphasized the physical and mental demands of the ultra-marathon, cautioning that not all participants may finish due to the extreme conditions.

Alice Springs resident Lachie Donchi, a first-time competitor in the Sonder Monster, expressed his enthusiasm for the unique terrain of the Larapinta Trail. Describing the technical and rocky nature of the trail, he acknowledged the daunting yet thrilling experience that awaits him in the race.
Liz Woodgate, a celebrated ultra-marathoner and trail enthusiast, shared her deep connection to the Larapinta Trail and the joy of exploring its rugged beauty. Woodgate, known as the Queen of the Larapinta Trail, has achieved remarkable feats on the trail, setting records and inspiring fellow runners with her passion and resilience.

Returning to this year's event as a race director, Woodgate emphasized the importance of appreciating the journey, acknowledging the support of volunteers, and savoring the camaraderie among participants. She highlighted the dedication of volunteers who provide essential aid and encouragement to runners throughout the challenging race.
The West Macs Monster ultra-marathon not only tests the physical limits of participants but also fosters a sense of community and shared achievement among runners. As the event continues to grow in popularity and economic impact, it remains a testament to the enduring spirit of endurance sports and the natural beauty of the Australian outback.
