The Valencia Marathon Trinidad Alfonso Zurich has been a significant contributor to the Valencian economy, as confirmed by an economic impact study conducted by the Ivie (Valencian Institute of Economic Research). The race held in December not only bolstered the economy but also played a crucial role in the economic, tourism, and social recovery following a devastating flood that hit the Valencian province just weeks before the event. The study revealed that the marathon generated nearly 40 million euros in tourist spending in the city and its metropolitan area.
Despite a slight decrease in the number of registered runners leading up to the event, the Valencia Marathon made a substantial impact on the economy. The total expenditure associated with organizing the marathon, estimated at 6.8 million euros, combined with the tourist spending by participants and their companions from outside Valencia, amounted to the significant sum. While the number of runners decreased slightly compared to the previous year, the tourist spending witnessed a notable increase, with foreign participants contributing significantly to this surge.
The economic benefits extended beyond just tourist spending. According to the Ivie report, the 2024 Valencia Marathon injected 23.9 million euros into the GDP of the Comunitat Valenciana, marking a substantial increase from the previous year. Additionally, the event created 732 full-time equivalent jobs over a one-year period, further boosting the region’s economy and employment sector.
For every euro invested in organizing the marathon, the event yielded 3.5 euros in income for the Valencian economy. Over the years, the marathon has increasingly become a vital economic driver, with a significant multiplier effect on income and employment. The service sector, particularly the hospitality industry, reaped the most benefits from the economic impact of the marathon in 2024, followed by real estate, business services, and trade.
Besides income generation and employment, the marathon also had a positive fiscal impact, contributing 13.1 million euros to the public coffers through various taxes. The director of the study highlighted the marathon’s expanding international profile, with a majority of runners coming from outside Spain, showcasing the event’s growing popularity on the global stage.
Moreover, the Valencia Marathon organizers, runners, and sponsors collectively donated over one million euros towards charitable initiatives aimed at reactivating sports programs in the flood-affected areas, demonstrating a commitment to social responsibility and community welfare. The event not only serves as a platform for athletic achievement but also as a catalyst for economic growth, tourism promotion, and social recovery in the region.
