Sofia is abuzz with anticipation as it prepares to host the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon 2025 on October 11 and 12, an event that is set to be the largest marathon in Bulgaria. With less than three months to go, over 6,000 participants from more than 60 countries are expected to grace the event, ranging from seasoned athletes to casual running enthusiasts.
For the eighth consecutive year, Wizz Air, renowned as Europe’s most environmentally sustainable airline, will headline the marathon as the general sponsor. The upcoming marathon promises two days filled with competitive fervor, cultural immersion, and surprises for both runners and onlookers. Participants have the option to engage in the full 42 km marathon, a 21 km half marathon, a 10 km run, or a 5 km mass participation race.
The marathon route for 2025 will showcase some of Sofia’s most iconic landmarks. Starting and ending in front of the National Art Gallery on Knyaz Alexander Parvi Square, runners will traverse significant sites such as the National Assembly, Largo, Vasil Levski Boulevard, Alabin Street, and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Beyond being a test of physical endurance, the marathon offers a scenic journey through the capital’s most picturesque locales.
Top finishers in the primary categories will be awarded prizes, with the 42 km marathon boasting a prize fund ranging from 500 leva for tenth place to 6,000 leva for the winner. Participants are also encouraged to join other Wizz Air-sponsored marathons across Europe as part of the WIZZ Run Series, earning points for each kilometer covered. The male and female runners with the highest total points stand a chance to win four WIZZ All You Can Fly subscriptions for a year.
Anastasia Novak, Corporate Sustainability and Communications Manager at Wizz Air, emphasized the broader significance of the marathon, stating that it transcends being merely a race. She noted that the event transforms Sofia into a global celebration of endurance, culture, and international connections, aligning with Wizz Air’s values of promoting a healthy lifestyle and sustainability.
Wizz Air has been a steadfast supporter of active lifestyles and running events, with over 120,000 participants engaging in the WIZZ Challenge across Europe in 2024. Running is hailed as an accessible and budget-friendly sport, resonating with Wizz Air’s mission to provide affordable travel opportunities and inspire exploration of Europe’s diverse destinations.
Registration for the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon 2025 is open until September 30 on the official event website. Standard registration fees apply until September 20, with a higher late-registration rate for last-minute entrants from September 21 to 30.
